Use this guide alongside the official service
Read the steps here first and keep the relevant documents or questions ready. Outside websites open in a new tab, so this guide stays here. To continue, return to the Pension Path tab or close the new tab.
If online steps are difficult, find phone, paper or in-person help.
Check the decision and dates
Keep the letter and identify what you disagree with, the reasons and any due date. Ask for an explanation if needed; you can also request formal review directly.
An Authorised Review Officer provides free formal review. For many entitlement decisions, requesting review within 13 weeks protects potential arrears. Late review may still be possible, but arrears can differ. Debt-review timing is different; follow the actual instructions.
Further review through the Administrative Review Tribunal may be available after the relevant decision. Use its specific instructions and deadline rather than assuming the first-stage timetable continues.
If the letter says you owe money
Check how the debt was calculated and the period involved. Compare the agency's information with your reports, payslips, asset evidence and correspondence.
Review does not automatically pause debt recovery. Ask Centrelink specifically for a recovery pause while review is underway and confirm the response. A hardship request does not guarantee debt cancellation.
Your next steps
- Record the letter date, due date, amount or entitlement issue and your reasons.
- Use the official review channel and keep proof of the request and supporting evidence.
- If recovery or repayment is unaffordable, separately request a pause, repayment arrangement or hardship consideration.
- Obtain social security legal help for a difficult dispute and financial counselling for debt/budget problems.
Use the right human help
Economic Justice Australia lists social security legal services near you. The National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 connects people with free financial counselling.
A complaint about service or delay is separate from a formal entitlement review. Pension Path's enquiry email cannot lodge a review, pause recovery or preserve a government deadline.
Verify unexpected contacts through official agency channels. Do not give passwords or identity documents to someone who calls claiming to recover a debt.
Your next-step checklist
For your own notes. Ticks do not submit a claim or notify an agency.
Print or write down your steps if you prefer.
Your official next step
When you are ready, use the official instructions to apply or make your change. Keep this guide open while you work through the service. Follow that service's instructions and keep any confirmation it gives you.
