Use this guide alongside the official service
Read the steps here first and keep the relevant documents or questions ready. Outside websites open in a new tab, so this guide stays here. To continue, return to the Pension Path tab or close the new tab.
If online steps are difficult, find phone, paper or in-person help.
Find what happened
Read the Centrelink message or decision letter. Look for the effective date, reason, missing information, review rights and any restoration instructions.
Possible reasons include changed income/assets, work, overdue reporting or evidence, travel, residence or household changes. Do not assume every nil payment means permanent cancellation.
If you cannot find a letter or understand the change, call the Older Australians line on 132 300 and ask for an explanation.
Act on the relevant route
- If reporting or evidence is overdue, contact Centrelink promptly and provide what is required.
- If circumstances changed, report the correct details and ask about reassessment.
- If work caused qualifying nil payments, ask whether the work-related suspension and restoration rules apply.
- If you disagree with the decision, use the official formal-review process and keep its deadlines in view.
Work-related suspension has conditions
Qualifying Australian work income producing more than 12 consecutive nil-payment fortnights can lead to suspension for up to two years, with Pensioner Concession Card retention.
Ask whether you are covered and how to restore pension before the deadline. Exceptions apply, and a new claim can be needed later. Other cancellation reasons do not automatically receive this protection.
Do not overlook your card or bills
Check whether your concession card remains valid and tell relevant providers if entitlement changes. Other health-card options have separate tests; you must not use an expired card as proof.
If you cannot meet essential bills, contact a free financial counsellor through the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007. Your state page has housing and crisis routes if accommodation is at risk.
Help with an incorrect decision
Social security legal services can help with difficult disputes. A service complaint does not replace an entitlement review. Keep letters, evidence, dates and contact records; request interpreter or in-person help if needed.
Your next-step checklist
For your own notes. Ticks do not submit a claim or notify an agency.
