Rent, housing and somewhere safe to stay

Help with ongoing rent and help finding a home have different rules. If you need somewhere safe tonight, use your state's crisis route rather than waiting for an ordinary housing application.

Use this guide alongside the official service

Read the steps here first and keep the relevant documents or questions ready. Outside websites open in a new tab, so this guide stays here. To continue, return to the Pension Path tab or close the new tab.

If online steps are difficult, find phone, paper or in-person help.

Rent Assistance is linked to eligible payments

There is no separate standalone Rent Assistance claim. Services Australia assesses it with an eligible payment when you supply your rent and accommodation details.

A CSHC by itself does not provide Rent Assistance. The amount of eligible rent and your accommodation arrangement matter. Private rent, board, site fees and some retirement-village arrangements have different conditions.

Housing owned or managed by a state housing authority generally does not qualify. Some community housing can qualify, so do not treat public and community housing as identical.

Public and community housing

Each state and territory has its own application process, household evidence and need assessment. Use your local page to find the official application or housing office.

Approval or priority registration is not a promise of an immediate home. Suitable vacancies, location, accessibility and household needs affect the wait. Keep contact details and required updates current.

If accommodation is urgent

Open your state or territory page for the current homelessness intake or emergency-accommodation service. Ask Izzy can help locate nearby support. Availability is assessed by the service; a referral does not guarantee a bed.

If there is immediate danger, call 000. Domestic violence, disaster shelter and long-term housing are distinct routes; tell the service what makes your situation unsafe.

Practical next steps

  1. Check your rent/accommodation details with Centrelink if you receive an eligible payment.
  2. Contact the local housing service for ordinary housing needs, or the current crisis intake for urgent safety.
  3. Gather household, tenancy, income and health/accessibility evidence requested by the service.
  4. If rent arrears or bills are causing hardship, seek free financial counselling as well as housing help.

If forms or evidence are difficult

Ask the housing service about staff assistance, interpreters, paper applications and alternatives for documents you cannot safely obtain. Do not delay an urgent enquiry while trying to complete a routine checklist.
