Use this guide alongside the official service
Read the steps here first and keep the relevant documents or questions ready. Outside websites open in a new tab, so this guide stays here. To continue, return to the Pension Path tab or close the new tab.
If online steps are difficult, find phone, paper or in-person help.
Start with your state and bill
Open your state or territory page and identify the relevant scheme. Seniors Cards, Pensioner Concession Cards and Commonwealth Seniors Health Cards are accepted differently across programs.
Check who holds the account, the property address and whether it is your principal residence. Shared households and an account in your partner's name can require extra checks.
A council or provider may have its own application. A rates rebate reduces a charge; a deferral postpones payment and has separate conditions. Ask what you are applying for.
Your application steps
- Find the current official scheme and confirm the exact accepted card.
- Contact the bill issuer or administering agency to register your concession or obtain the application.
- Supply evidence only through its official channel. Ask about deadlines, renewal and whether any backdating is available.
- Check the next bill and keep the application confirmation. Update details if you move or your card changes.
If someone else supplies your electricity
Retirement villages, caravan/lifestyle parks and embedded networks can bill residents through an operator rather than a standard retailer. These arrangements may use a different claim route.
Ask who administers the concession for your arrangement. Do not assume a standard retailer registration or another resident's entitlement covers your bill.
If you cannot afford to pay
Contact the provider promptly about hardship assistance or a payment arrangement. A concession and debt assistance are separate matters; do not ignore an overdue bill while waiting for a rebate.
The National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 provides free financial counselling. Emergency-relief services may help with essentials subject to their assessment and availability.
Offline help
Ask the scheme or provider for a phone, paper or in-person option if online application is difficult. Keep a record of the person contacted and the agreed next step.
Your next-step checklist
For your own notes. Ticks do not submit a claim or notify an agency.
Print or write down your steps if you prefer.
