Use this guide alongside the official service
Read the steps here first and keep the relevant documents or questions ready. Outside websites open in a new tab, so this guide stays here. To continue, return to the Pension Path tab or close the new tab.
If online steps are difficult, find phone, paper or in-person help.
Check your payment and card
Read the decision letter and confirm the payment rate, start date and bank details. Keep it with your claim records and ask Centrelink to explain anything unexpected.
Eligible Age Pension recipients generally receive a Pensioner Concession Card. Check the card details and validity. It does not automatically activate every provider's discount or make all health care free.
Put available help to use
- Choose your state or territory and check the concessions relevant to your card, home and bills.
- Contact electricity, gas, water and council providers as relevant. Ask how to register, whose name the account must be in and whether a separate application is needed.
- If you rent or pay site fees, check your accommodation details with Centrelink and whether Rent Assistance applies.
- Show the correct concession card when buying eligible medicines or arranging health services.
- If you are a couple or family, register as a family for Medicare Safety Nets even if you share a Medicare card. Ask your pharmacy separately about PBS spending records.
Know the limits
A doctor may choose to bulk bill, but the card does not require them to. Public dental, hearing and ambulance eligibility have their own rules. A Seniors Card and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card are different cards.
Moving, shared accounts, retirement-village bills and embedded electricity networks can change the application route. Confirm the provider's actual scheme instead of assuming pension approval is enough.
Keep your payment correct
Read the reporting instructions in your account and letters. Keep details of work, income/assets, relationship, accommodation and travel up to date.
If online accounts or concession applications are difficult, ask Centrelink or the relevant provider for phone, paper or in-person help. FIS can explain financial questions; financial counselling can help with unaffordable bills.
Your next-step checklist
For your own notes. Ticks do not submit a claim or notify an agency.
Print or write down your steps if you prefer.
