Help with health and medicine costs

A concession card can reduce some health costs, but it does not make every appointment, medicine or service free. Check the exact service and card before relying on cover.

Use this guide alongside the official service

Read the steps here first and keep the relevant documents or questions ready. Outside websites open in a new tab, so this guide stays here. To continue, return to the Pension Path tab or close the new tab.

If online steps are difficult, find phone, paper or in-person help.

Medicare and PBS have different safety nets

Medicare Safety Nets apply to eligible out-of-hospital Medicare services during the calendar year. Individuals are registered automatically, but couples and families must register together even if they share a Medicare card.

The lower Extended Medicare Safety Net threshold includes eligible concession-card holders. Provider fees and benefit caps can still leave costs. Ask the practice about your expected out-of-pocket amount.

The PBS Safety Net tracks eligible medicine spending separately. If you use more than one pharmacy, keep reliable prescription-spending records. Ask the pharmacist about the record and safety-net card application. Extra medicine charges can remain.

Hearing and dental care

The Hearing Services Program voucher pathway includes eligible PCC holders or their spouses and specified other categories. A CSHC alone does not establish eligibility. Ask about any device or ongoing charges before agreeing to treatment.

Public dental eligibility, priority, waiting lists and patient contributions vary by state. Some states accept CSHC or additional cards; others require an individual PCC/HCC holder. Being listed on someone else's card is not always enough.

Use your state page and the clinic's current instructions. General dental care is not automatically covered by Medicare.

Ambulance is a separate check

Medicare does not cover ambulance costs. Residence, individual concession entitlement, membership/insurance, emergency versus other transport and interstate destination can change coverage.

Do not assume a pension or Seniors Card covers every ambulance journey. If an invoice arrives, contact the provider promptly about eligibility verification, review or payment assistance.

In a medical emergency call 000. Checking a fee exemption is a separate matter and should not delay emergency help.

Your next steps

  1. Confirm your exact card and show it to the service or pharmacy.
  2. Register your family for Medicare Safety Nets and keep PBS records separately.
  3. Check local dental and ambulance rules, especially before interstate travel.
  4. Ask the service about costs, waits, accessibility and patient-travel assistance.

Help without online forms

A Medicare office, pharmacy or the relevant state service can explain its process. Ask for telephone, interpreter or staff assistance rather than sending health or identity documents to Pension Path.
