Get the Age Pension

Understand your pension decision

Your decision letter explains the outcome of your claim. Read it carefully even if you have already noticed money arriving or a card being issued.

Use this guide alongside the official service

Read the steps here first and keep the relevant documents or questions ready. Outside websites open in a new tab, so this guide stays here. To continue, return to the Pension Path tab or close the new tab.

If online steps are difficult, find phone, paper or in-person help.

Start with the letter

  1. Find the decision, date, reasons, payment start date and any further action.
  2. Check the household, income and asset details against the information you supplied.
  3. Keep the letter and relevant evidence. If something is unclear, ask Services Australia for an explanation.

If your claim is approved

Check the rate, start date and payment details. A part pension can follow an income or assets assessment; reaching pension age does not mean everyone receives the maximum.

Read your ongoing reporting obligations. A Pensioner Concession Card generally follows an eligible Age Pension payment, but bill, transport and local concessions may still need separate registration.

If you rent, check that the agency has the correct accommodation information. Medicare and PBS safety nets also have their own steps.

If your claim is refused or the rate seems wrong

Find the exact reason. Missing evidence, residence rules and financial limits call for different next actions. Ask about corrected information, reassessment or formal review rather than assuming a new claim fixes every issue.

You can request a free formal review by an Authorised Review Officer. For many entitlement decisions, requesting review within 13 weeks protects potential arrears. Late review may still be possible, but payment consequences can differ. Follow the letter and obtain help promptly.

A refused Age Pension does not automatically mean you cannot get a health card or local assistance. The Commonwealth Seniors Health Card uses a different assessment.

Your next-step checklist

For your own notes. Ticks do not submit a claim or notify an agency.

Print or write down your steps if you prefer.
