Before pension age or without Age Pension

Stopping work before Age Pension age does not create a special retirement payment. If you cannot get Age Pension, other assistance may still be available under its own rules.

Use this guide alongside the official service

Read the steps here first and keep the relevant documents or questions ready. Outside websites open in a new tab, so this guide stays here. To continue, return to the Pension Path tab or close the new tab.

If online steps are difficult, find phone, paper or in-person help.

If you are below Age Pension age

Age Pension age is 67, while super release has different conditions. Plan how essential costs will be covered before changing work or accessing super.

Depending on your circumstances, JobSeeker, Disability Support Pension or Carer Payment may be relevant. Each has its own financial, residence, work, health or caring requirements. A diagnosis alone does not establish DSP eligibility.

Older JobSeeker recipients can have different mutual-obligation options, but age does not remove every obligation. Ask Services Australia what approved activities apply.

If you already receive a payment

Respond to any Age Pension transfer invitation. The agency needs your choice and requested information; ignoring it can interrupt the current payment.

DSP and Carer Payment recipients should compare work, travel, supplements, care and super rules before transferring. You may have a choice rather than an automatic switch.

If Age Pension is unavailable

Read the assessment and check whether evidence, a valuation, changed circumstances or review is relevant. A rejection does not mean every other support route is closed.

CSHC has its own income/residence rules and no assets test. LIHCC has a different income test. State Seniors Cards and local assistance have separate conditions.

There is no universal cash fallback at pension age. JobSeeker is for eligible people below pension age; Special Benefit has restrictive conditions. Qualifying veterans should check DVA's separate payment/card routes.

Practical next steps

  1. Check the reason Age Pension is not yet available or was refused.
  2. Use the official relevant payment and card criteria.
  3. Review your household budget and essential costs.
  4. Seek FIS education, financial counselling or specialist review help as needed.
