Support in Tasmania

Tasmania's Seniors Card, federal concession cards and each local service have different purposes. Public dental care requires the patient's own primary-holder card. Resident ambulance arrangements do not provide identical cover in every other state. Housing Connect Tasmania assesses housing needs and also offers an urgent route if you have nowhere safe to sleep. Have your own card, bills and residence details ready.

Keep your place while checking support

For each program below, check who it is for and follow the preparation steps before opening its official link. Outside websites open in a new tab. Return to the Pension Path tab, or close the new tab, to continue with the other support here.

Check your card and the program

A Pensioner Concession Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, Low Income Health Care Card and state Seniors Card have different rules. A pension approval does not enrol you in every concession.

Understand the cards

Cards

Tasmanian Seniors Card

Tasmania's card has age, residence and paid-work conditions rather than Age Pension means tests. Applying, replacing a card and keeping details current use the Service Tasmania routes.

Who it is for: People aged 60 or over living in Tasmania, including retirees without a pension.

  • The work limit is no more than 20 paid hours a week averaged over 12 months.
  • Check the residence and other application conditions.
  • A Seniors Card does not itself establish federal health-card or pension eligibility.

What to do

  1. Read the current card application and update instructions.
  2. Prepare the requested identity and residence information.
  3. Choose online, paper or assisted access and keep your details current when circumstances change.

Bills and household costs

Tasmanian annual electricity concession

The annual electricity concession uses specified cards, account responsibility and name-matching rules. Other water, rates and household concessions have separate entries in the Tasmanian guide.

Who it is for: People responsible for the eligible electricity supply at their home.

  • Check the accepted current card rather than assuming a Seniors Card or CSHC suffices.
  • Your card and account names and responsibility for the bill matter.
  • Embedded networks have a different process from ordinary retail electricity accounts.

What to do

  1. Read the current annual concession instructions.
  2. Ask the retailer or embedded-network operator how to provide the required evidence.
  3. Use the guide for other household charges and check the next account for the concession; seek bill help separately if in arrears.

Transport

Tasmanian transport concessions

The Tasmanian concessions guide identifies transport and other schemes separately from business discounts. The operator's current accepted-card and ticket rules determine how a benefit is used.

Who it is for: Older residents checking bus or other transport costs, and people arranging interstate journeys.

  • A federal concession card and the state Seniors Card are different credentials.
  • The service, ticket and any concession registration need their own check.
  • Interstate concessions should be confirmed with the destination operator.

What to do

  1. Find the relevant transport service in the concessions guide.
  2. Follow its current ticket and proof-of-card instructions.
  3. Ask about the trip before booking and carry the required evidence rather than assuming every journey is covered.

Public dental

Tasmanian adult dental services

The patient must be the primary holder of a current PCC or HCC for the listed adult service. Telephone triage separates urgent single problems from general waiting-list care.

Who it is for: Adults checking their own public dental eligibility and treatment costs.

  • Being listed on another person's card is not the same as being its primary holder.
  • Co-payments apply and differ by treatment; ask about a payment plan if needed.
  • The fee table has its own effective date, so check the current amount before relying on an older page footer.

What to do

  1. Use the Health Tasmania adult-service contact instructions.
  2. Have your own current card and describe the problem for triage.
  3. Ask about fees, urgency, waiting arrangements and payment options before the appointment.

Ambulance

Ambulance Tasmania resident and interstate costs

Most Tasmanian resident costs are waived with exceptions. Interstate arrangements depend on destination and service: SA and Queensland have no reciprocal agreement. Do not assume resident cover means all ambulance transport is free everywhere.

Who it is for: Tasmanian residents planning travel or receiving an ambulance invoice.

  • The official page lists Victoria emergency care; NSW emergency road and air; ACT and WA emergency road; NT emergency road plus non-emergency transport.
  • Service exclusions and destination conditions still apply; check before travel.
  • An invoice waiver can require certified evidence of Tasmanian residence.

What to do

  1. Read the destination section and ask about the planned service before travelling.
  2. If invoiced, use Ambulance Tasmania's submission and residence-evidence instructions.
  3. Ask about review or payment plans if a fee remains; always call 000 for an emergency without delaying for cover checks.

Housing and urgent help

Housing Connect Tasmania

Housing Connect Tasmania assesses housing and support needs, including social housing and help finding or keeping a private rental. It is a different service from SA Housing Connect.

Who it is for: People needing affordable or safe housing, including older people and households with accessibility needs.

  • Social housing has residence, immigration, income and household asset rules.
  • Current application guidance recognises some interstate exceptions; do not assume every interstate applicant is excluded.
  • An assessed application or priority need does not guarantee immediate accommodation.

What to do

  1. Contact Housing Connect for an assessment or visit an office.
  2. Provide the requested household and housing-need evidence and discuss accessibility.
  3. Keep contacts current while waiting; if there is nowhere safe tonight use the 24-hour route below.

Urgent housing and support

Call 000 if someone is in immediate danger. A housing application is not an immediate shelter booking.

Housing Connect Tasmania

If you have nowhere safe to sleep, call 24 hours a day. Ordinary housing assistance is available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm or through offices. Needs and available options are assessed.
